In a small village located by the Qing River, a sleepy stream that leads to the great Yangtze River, Mr. Cheng earns his living as a ‘corpse hunter’ — a precarious profession that is often lonely and one of disrepute in Chinese society. He lives by himself on his boat most of the time, and is accompanied by his toy rubber duck every time he dives into the water. During dry season, Mr. Cheng struggles to earn enough money to send his daughter to a reputable middle school, causing his wife to put pressure on him to get a normal job at a factory.
