Aterui is a play about ethnic minorities in Japan, about the subjugation of ‟others.‟ In this case it is about the Yamato Empire’s attempt to control the Emishi people from michi no oku,or the ‟end of the land,‟ in what is now Northern Tōhoku. The Yamato fought a 40 year war to ‟incorporate‟ the northern lands from 774-881.
