The film tells a series of stories that happened after Zhu Ba Jie returned from studying in the West. According to legend, the Tang monk and his apprentice went through hardships and obstacles to reach Lingshan, and obtained the award of the Buddhist scriptures. The merits were complete, and the master and apprentice were all happy.
