The film is set in a run-down coal-mining town in 1950s Fukuoka. Michiyo, moved from Tokyo with her young son Mamoru after getting divorced from her husband. When Mamoru is picked on by bullies, a tough local boy named Shinichi comes to his rescue. Grateful to Shinichi for helping her son, Michiyo is the first woman to show him motherly kindness.
