In the summer of 1982, Sakurai Masahiko returns home to Nagasaki so he can participate in sending off the floating lanterns during O-bon. It's the first O-bon since his beloved aunt, Setsuko, has died. Masahiko is approached for an interview with a magazine, which makes him remember his happiest and his most bittersweet memories of her.
