Chikamatsu Shigemichi, an investigative prosecutor who has been assigned to Niigata, is on a tour of Sado guided by Shiraishi Suzuko, an administrative official, when he receives news of an incident. Yamashita Masashi, a chef, was murdered in a small restaurant that was about to open. The first person to discover it is Kagawa Yuriko Kagawa, the owner of the store and Yamashita's fiancée. She attended the funeral of an old friend of hers in Tokyo and returned the next day to find Yamashita murdered.
