On a business trip, Kaoru visits the provincial city where he spent his student years and learns Yukiko, the landlady of Tsukimitsu House where he once boarded, died alone. She was 90-years-old. A third-year university student at the time, Kaoru received an overabundance of warmth and kindness from Yukiko and another lodger Onoda. He recalls how those days became suffocating.
