In 1771, the Turghuts (Kalmyks) were desperate to escape Tsarist Russia's genocide and decided to return to their motherland in Dzungaria, located in the Qing Dynasty. Alatansan, a subordinate of Ubasi Khan, was instructed to lead a massive migration to the East and draw a map of the return route along the way.
