A woman whose gambling husband is framed and thrown in prison, must give birth to their child alone. Raising her child by herself she takes on menial tasks and works to exhaustion. One night her face is horribly burned and disfigured in a house fire but she manages to save her child from harm. As he grows older and is ridiculed for his mother's scarred face she tells him his mother disappeared and she was only the maid. He rejects her and goes off to find his mother, an odyssey which will have tragic consequences.
