Writer Chaya Jiro and Yamakura Shinkichi, the deputy editor of a weekly magazine, visit Fuefuki city in Yamanashi prefecture, to gather information. They discover the body of a murdered woman, Kimura Chinatsu, on the banks of the Fuefuki River. Chaya knew the woman before her death and remembers that she was concerned about Kubozuka Yukio, who runs a restaurant chain, and begins investigating the relationship between them.
