During WWII the Japanese occupied most of China and used the people for forced labor. They were notoriously cruel and some Chinese rose in resistance. The occupying Japanese were worried that the good Chinese martial arts fighters might join with the resistance, so a big tournament was held with the covert aim of killing or crippling the Chinese fighters.
