In a certain city in the 1990s, Ai Fei works as a shopping guide in a fashion store. She has a good voice but is shy and lacks confidence. Her boyfriend, Gao Da Long, is a taxi driver. During a karaoke outing, they befriend Wu Ji, the karaoke manager of Sapphire Nightclub. He suggests to Ai Fei to receive formal singing training. Da Long is very supportive of Ai Fei becoming a singer and even fetches her home every night after her performance. As she becomes more popular, Da Long feels he is not good enough for her and suggests a breakup, but she gives herself to him. One night while making their way home in his taxi, Ai Fei gets harassed by ruffians and Da Long accidentally kills an innocent passerby in the scuffle.
