In 494 B.C., the Kingdom of Wu defeated the Kingdom of Yue. King Gou Jian of the Kingdom of Yue became a slave and was humiliated for three years in the Wu Palace. After returning to his kingdom, Gou Jian endured countless hardships, utilized the loyal talents of Wen Zhong and Fan Li, and fought to revive the kingdom. Wen Zhong presented ‟Nine Strategies to Bring Down Wu‟. Xi Shi, an ordinary washer girl, bid farewell to her lover Fan Li and went to Wu with the intention of not being a conquered people. While the King of Wu, Fu Chai and the ministers were wary of Gou Jian and repeatedly tested him, Xi Shi was always able to notice and warn them. She cooperated with Fan Li and the others so that they could survive the danger. While the Kingdom of Yue was secretly gathering popular support, the Kingdom of Wu was instead boasting of its achievements, colonizing infinitely, and the power of the two kingdoms had become evenly matched. Gou Jian finally seized the opportunity as Fu Chai fought for hegemony north to Huang Chi to conquer the Kingdom of Wu's capital Gusu and bring about the revival of the kingdom.
